On February 7, 2019, the DC Department of Human Resources (DCHR) has announced the 2019 cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for retirees and survivors receiving annuities under the District of Columbia Police Officers and Firefighters’ Retirement Plan and the District of Columbia Teachers’ Retirement Plan. They are as follows:
Police officers and firefighters who retired on or after February 15, 1980,* and their survivors: 1.9%
Teachers hired before, on, or after November 1, 1996, and their survivors: 1.8%
COLAs are effective on March 1 of each year and will be included in annuity payments payable April 1.
Please note: Members who retired after March 1, 2018, and before March 1, 2019, are entitled to a prorated COLA equal to 1/12th of the above increase for each month or partial month (for a maximum of 12 months) for which their annuity was effective. For more detailed information about the COLAs, download and open the PDF attached below.
*Police officers and firefighters who retired before February 15, 1980, are under equalization rather than COLAs, and receive annuity adjustments based on pay increases granted to active members.
