Teachers' Summary Plan Description

Wednesday, May 30, 2018

The 2017 Teachers' Summary Plan Description (SPD) summarizes the statutory terms of the Plan, as well as your rights and responsibilities as a Plan member as of December 31, 2017. The full text of the Plan is contained in Chapter 20 of Title 38 of the Code of the District of Columbia (D.C. Code).

Although there have been no substantive amendments to the benefits offered under the Plan since the publication of the 2012 SPD, we updated the SPD to clarify statutory provisions of the Plan, remove redundant information for easier reading, and provide explanatory information, where needed.

Also, since the 2012 SPD was published, the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) has changed the retirement process from paper to electronic by incorporating self-service and online applications. We have updated the administrative and procedural sections (“Applying for and Receiving Your Benefit” and “General Information”) to reflect those changes. We have also updated addresses and contact information (e.g., phone and fax numbers, email addresses and websites) in the “Contact Information” section to assure that you are better able to reach the appropriate office with any questions you may have. In addition, we have made changes in response to the feedback we have received from many of you since the 2012 SPD was issued. We hope you find all of these improvements helpful.
