The 2012 Retired Police Officer, Active Teacher, and Active Firefighter Elections Process Has Commenced

The DC Retirement Board (DCRB) has commenced the 2012 Retired Police Officer, Active Teacher, and Active Firefighter elections process. The election schedule for all elections is as follows:

Nomination of Candidate for Trustee form mailed September 17, 2012
Nomination of Candidate for Trustee form to be returned October 9, 2012
Drawing of Lots (Placement on Ballot) Candidates ONLY October 26, 2012
Ballots mailed October 30, 2012
Deadline for ballots to be returned and last day to vote via telephone  November 30, 2012
Certification of results December 2012
Result Published in the DC Register December 2012
Challenges to election filed with the Board December 28, 2012-January 21, 2013
Election results are final January 22, 2013
Elected terms begins January 28, 2013

Retired Police Officer, Active Teacher, and Active Firefighter are defined in the DCRB Election Rules (see PDF below in Attachments section) as follows:

  • Retired Police Officer- a member or officer of the Metropolitan Police force who has retired under a regular or disability retirement pursuant to the program for Police and Firefighters Retirement and Disability.  This does not include their survivors.
  • Active Teacher- an employee who serves in a salary class position ET 1-15 under the District of Columbia Public School (DCPS) system and is a participant in the program for Retirement of Public School Teachers. This does not include their survivors.
  • Active Firefighter- a member or officer of the Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department of the District of Columbia who is a participant in the program for Police and Firefighters Retirement and Disability.  This does not include their survivors.

Retired Police Officers and Active Firefighters can vote either by mail ballot or via telephone. Active Teachers, per 401.6, can vote by mail ballot only. The instructions to vote will be mailed with the ballot.
